August packed in a lot of engineering work for the machine stack, with the Emulator, Rollups Contracts, and TypeScript tooling all shipping, plus progress on the Sequencer and a new alpha for the Machine bindings that makes it even easier to run a Cartesi Machine right in the browser, one tab away. It was also the month Linux turned 35, the foundation the Cartesi Machine runs on, and we made sure not to let it pass quietly while celebrating all media and community highlights.

Here’s your full roundup of what happened across the Cartesi ecosystem this past month.

Tech

On the tech side, August was a machine-stack month: the Machine Emulator hit v0.21.0 with major fraud-proof tooling upgrades, Rollups Contracts pushed from alpha.7 to alpha.9 with hardening and better dev tooling, the TypeScript stack caught up to match, and the Sequencer alpha expanded testing across environments.

Cartesi’s Machine Emulator v0.21.0 is now released, bringing a significant set of improvements for machine-based verification and fraud proofs. The release adds revamped documentation explaining the verification game, new CLI capabilities for calculating computation hashes and generating output proofs, and Lua helpers for prototyping fraud-proof protocols.

It also introduces NVRAM address ranges for more efficient persistent state, rolling stored machines with snapshot-based reverts, stronger snapshot durability guarantees, and additional hardening around advance-state outcomes.

The release also featured updates to machine-guest-tools v0.18.0, machine-linux-image v0.21.0, and machine-solidity-step v0.15.0, bringing the wider machine stack in line with the new emulator.

The Rollups Contracts stack saw several incremental releases, with deposit refunds, additional machine validation checks on claim submissions, and broader contract hardening introduced in 3.0.0-alpha.7.

Subsequent releases improved the developer experience with new Etherscan and Sourcify verification targets, more accessible deployment artifacts, and a USDC-like token for devnet testing, while also updating the machine-solidity-step dependency.

The latest 3.0.0-alpha.9 release further improves compatibility and reproducibility of release artifacts, rounding out a series of changes aimed at making the contracts safer and easier to build, verify, and integrate.

In another vein, the Cartesi TypeScript tooling received a major update in August, with @cartesi/client, @cartesi/react, @cartesi/codec, and @cartesi/wagmi-plugin aligning with Rollups Contracts v3.0.0-alpha.9. The update brings the latest contract ABIs and deployment addresses across supported networks, adds devnet contract addresses and test tokens, and incorporates the new RefundOutputBuilder and withdrawal tooling.

It also updates the client to work with the latest Rollups Node schema while moving deployment artifact consumption to the newer plaintext format introduced by the contracts stack. Read the docs here.

The Cartesi Sequencer is progressing through its early alpha phase, with v0.1.0-alpha.9 now available with documentation and examples to help developers get started, alongside canonical machine images for devnet and Sepolia and wallet-sequencer binaries for Linux on amd64 and arm64, making it easier for developers and early testers to run and validate the Sequencer across environments.

Ecosystem

This past month, apart from our Developer Advocates continuing to test components of the architecture, we’ve seen serious progress on tooling.

Contributors shipped a new alpha for the Cartesi Machine bindings, libraries that make it easier to run a machine in the browser. Try it on its dedicated playground and don’t be shy about sharing any feedback. Here you can configure, create, and run a machine right there, terminal included, without installing anything.

Also included in this alpha: the machine can now connect to a network, be run and controlled from a remote server, and display live terminal output, all directly from your browser tab. This makes it possible to interact with a running machine remotely while still seeing what’s happening in real time, without having to set up a local environment. In the Ethereum ecosystem, developers may finally be saying goodbye to ”stack too deep.” The next Ethereum update is expected to bring two important changes: the ability to deploy larger contracts and changes that allow compilers to better handle this.

Our developers welcomed the news, since Cartesi has been doing exactly that to make things more convenient for builders: removing these kinds of constraints so developers aren’t limited by the EVM’s stack limitations and can work with mainstream programming languages and their libraries.

We also love celebrating good practices in developer support across the industry, and we couldn’t miss giving a shoutout to Alchemy this August.

Our Developer Advocacy Lead, João Garcia, put up a post about the report our team submitted on intermittent eth_estimateGas failures on OP Sepolia, with a repro harness, A/B/C testing, and cross-provider comparisons included. Alchemy traced the issue to a bug, fixed it, and reported back once the fix was live.

Alchemy contributor Uttam Singh quoted the post, calling their support best-in-class in the industry, and the full thread is a good read on what great developer support actually looks like and how collaboration and communication should unfold between different protocols.

Community

On the community front, August brought us Linux’s birthday celebration.

Linux, the software stack that the Cartesi Machine boots directly on RISC-V, turned 35. That’s three and a half decades of battle-tested software, with open-source code scrutinized by a massive community of contributors around the world. Linus Torvalds launched Linux in 1991 and described it as ”just a hobby,” but luckily, the world disagreed.

Cartesi builds on that foundation, standing on the shoulders of giants instead of reinventing the wheel. Developers get the real Linux stack, with the same languages, libraries, and tools they already know and love, running inside a deterministic RISC-V machine that Ethereum can verify. That means dApp logic isn't limited to what fits inside the EVM. It can lean on decades of hardened Linux infrastructure, backed by Ethereum's security through fraud proofs.

We couldn’t let the occasion pass quietly. We wished Linux a happy birthday with an animated video, and the feed delivered as well, with the broader ecosystem around the world paying tribute across social channels. It was amazing to witness so much love and appreciation for this operating system, and we were once again strengthened in our core mission of bringing Linux onchain.

Media

On the media front, this month brought us a feature from the OGs over at House of Chimera. They went deep into the Cartesi Machine’s capabilities, while also highlighting some of our DeFi explorations and unique prototypes, a clear walkthrough of how PRT narrows a dispute down to a single RISC-V instruction, the Honeypot lifecycle, and more. And staying on the tech, we also surfaced some snippets of Developer Advocate Shaheen Ahmed on Dar Blockchain X Space, talking about how battle-tested software could prevent many of the exploits we’re seeing, what it's like to build onchain with a Linux execution layer, and how DeFi could benefit from what Cartesi has to offer. Cartesi continued its TikTok journey this month. The channel is growing and content is dropping regularly. Shorts, demos, and new tutorials are dropping there constantly.

July pushed the fraud-proof system further toward production, with claim staging adding a safety window to tournament finalization and progress on deposit refunds and TypeScript tooling strengthening the developer experience. Developer advocates kept testing the stack and spreading the word across podcasts and X Spaces, and the month's clearest signal came from the penguin itself, as it showed up everywhere, from Malaysia Blockchain Week to Ethereum's 11th birthday, walking proud across the ecosystem.

June answered one of the biggest questions on the road to production: what happens when an application stops and users need to recover their funds? Emergency withdrawals are now live and being tested, alongside continued improvements across the Rollups stack and developer tooling. Beyond the technology, the month's clearest signal came from the ecosystem itself, as two Cartesi Foundation board members stepped down to build full time on the stack, reinforcing growing conviction that the future of onchain finance will be built with verifiable compute.
